No, you should not have to have the trailer plugged into the 7-Way connector on your truck for the winch to work. Assuming the battery is adequately sized for the power draw of the winch then the winch would only need to be connected to that battery to function. Your Fulton T1801 may be slipping for a number of different reasons. Some of the most common come from use over time. If the teeth on the planetary gear or ratchet pawl start to wear down, or if the handle is stripped at the attachment point, you may experience slipping. The breaker assembly is the two white box looking deals that are attached on the wire near the positive battery post. I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and she seemed to think that the problem is most likely on the ground wire. You might try checking to see if it is loose or if there is corrosion where it attaches and fix as necessary.

You have the right idea with the ground problem. The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 does ground through its mounted location. If it is not attached to bare metal or if the metal is aluminum and not steel then that could interrupt the ground connection. I sounds like you have a short somewhere in your trailer wiring that is blowing the truck's right turn signal fuse. When the truck and trailer are NOT hitched together the fault in the trailer wiring cannot affect the truck but once you couple them together the short can reach the truck's circuits.

It sounds like a problem with tongue weight. In this case, the tongue weight may be too high meaning too much weight is forward of the trailer axle, pushing down on the hitch, or too low.
